So far we have it narrowed down to Gambel's Quail or California Quail
but they don't quite fit either description -- and they are in the wrong place.
Not very big, (robin or dove size) and they fly into the pines when they get scared.
The rest of the time they run across the ground like a roadrunner.

I've seen a bird similar to this in my backyard. There is a lake near by my house and several streams that run through my neiborhood. My yard is full of trees in the back and it sat pirched on a low branch. Then flew to a platform on my neighbors patio steps. It walked a couple of feet with an uncommon 'strut'. It definitly looked out of place. Seems it could be some type of quail not belonging to this region (northeast of metro Atlanta, GA.
